Portsmouth berths at Multimodal

With a rich maritime heritage Portsmouth has been known for its naval links and ocean going trade for centuries. With that in mind, it might surprise many that Portsmouth International Port, formerly known as the commercial or continental ferry port, has only been in operation since 1976.

Owned and operated by Portsmouth City Council, the Port has grown extensively over the decades. Initially it offered just one route to France from a small section of reclaimed harbour front. It is now known as Britain’s Best Connected Port with more destinations than any other UK Port. The Port’s location on the M275, with fast road connections to London, make for a hassle free start to a holiday.

In 2011 the Port opened its new terminal - part of a £16.5m investment in new passenger facilities. One of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the UK, it is heated by thermal sea energy and cooled by the coastal breeze which is captured by wind catchers on the roof. The spacious steel and glass terminal has airport style facilities, without the airport style queues.

Portsmouth International Port offers a wider range of ferry routes than any other UK port. It is also an increasingly popular destination for cruise ships. There are dedicated facilities for cruise customers, with passengers keen to explore the world-class attractions on the doorstep. The Port is also a key destination for fresh fruit and vegetables from all over the world. 70% of all the bananas eaten in the UK arrive at Portsmouth International Port before heading to supermarket shelves across the country.
