Impact and Konecranes/Gottwald win orders

Konecranes Lift Trucks and Impact have worked together to develop a bespoke container handler for bulk logistics specialists Bertschi UK to ensure maximum efficiency at its Middlesbrough base.

The 45 tonne reach stacker has a 33 tonne second row lifting capacity – two tonnes more than the industry standard for a truck of that size – and will be an integral part of an intensive workload of more than 200 container handlings per day.

The Bertschi UK team asked Impact’s local dealer in the North East, Advanced Material Handling, to supply the machine tailored for them to stack their containers.

As Konecranes exclusive distributor in the UK, Impact – along with Advanced – arranged for Bertschi UK Managing Director, Nick Brown, to visit the Konecranes factory in Markaryd, Sweden, to see the assembly process first-hand, test drive some trucks and to discuss the company’s specific requirements.

He says:

“I was seriously impressed at the factory visit. It was such a valuable trip to make for us and the passion and commitment from everyone involved from the outset has been outstanding.

“When you’re moving more than 200 containers per day, it’s absolutely critical to have the right machine for the job, and I know this bespoke machine is the perfect truck for my fleet. I am also 100 per cent sure the support from Konecranes, Impact and Advanced Material Handling is the best I can get for my business.”

Brown adds:

“The extensive spare parts stock reinforced my decision to specify the truck. I can’t afford unexpected downtime and it’s reassuring to know that if anything does happen, using Impact’s network, Advanced Material Handling can have our trucks back up and running within no time at all.”

The Konecranes reach stacker joins a fleet of four container handlers in operation, all serviced and maintained by Advanced Material Handling.

Bertschi UK was established in 1989 as a subsidiary of the Bertschi Group – a specialist in liquid, dry bulk and intermodal logistics, plus tanker cleaning and repair services. The group has more than 2,600 employees across 37 countries and operates more than 30,000 of its own containers for dry bulk and liquids.

Separately, Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbour Cranes has won a contract to handle fruit in the UK

Portsmouth based MMD Shipping Ltd. (MMD) will further increase its handling rates with the help of a new Konecranes Gottwald Model 6 Mobile Harbor Crane.

The eco-efficient diesel-electric 125 t machine was put into operation at the end of May 2017. In the terminal, located on England’s south coast, the crane will predominantly handle reefer containers and palletized fruit.

The new crane will play a crucial role in MMD’s long-term strategy to develop in line with changes to the fruit import business.

Mike Sellers, Director, MMD:

“When Portsmouth City Council purchased MMD in 2008, our common aim was to assume a leading role in the fruit handling segment in the UK. Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbor Cranes are our technological backbone. The first machine was delivered in 2000. The new Model 6 crane is now our ninth crane from Konecranes, and the largest so far. It is also the mobile harbor crane with the highest capacity on England’s south coast and enables us to serve even larger vessels.”

Neil Griffiths, Sales & Service Director UK, Mobile Harbor Cranes, Konecranes, is proud that MMD decided to opt for Konecranes Gottwald crane technology again:

“The history of this teamwork shows how terminals can grow gradually with our mobile harbor cranes and confirms our diversified portfolio philosophy. The first cranes supplied to MMD were Generation 4 machines, followed by two Generation 5 Model 4 cranes from our medium-sized crane family, one in 2011 and one in 2012. The new Model 6 crane in the G HMK 6507 two-rope variant with a maximum capacity of 125 t and an outreach up to 51 m, is MMD’s first machine from our large crane family and represents another significant step in our business relationship.”
