Finnlines and SOL announce service enhancements

From January 2017, Finnlines will extend its Spain-Zeebrugge service towards UK and Sweden.

Both destinations will be offered in cooperation with P&O Ferries and Swedish Orient Line respectively.

In this way Finnlines can offer roundtrips between Bilbao, Santander and Teesport, Tilbury or Gothenburg.

This will maximize the effectiveness of the Zeebrugge-Bilbao/Santander corridor with a perfectly synchronized transshipment for cargo coming from UK and Sweden. The synergies between the different services will make it possible to connect any port in the loop within a maximum transit time of five days which is far faster than any existing connection is this by road, rail or even sea.

The service is operated with modern Ro-Ro vessels that are suitable for all kinds of commodities: trailers, Ro-Ro, containers, mobile and breakbulk. The deck heights and ramp strengths are suitable for a variety of oversized and overweight cargoes.

In addition, Swedish Orient Line announced that it will open a new weekly ro-ro route between Ventpils (Latvia), Zeebrugge (Belgium) and Tilbury (UK) from the end of January.

Ragnar Johannson, managing director for Svenska Orient Linien AB, said the service would also add an additional cross-channel sailing between Tilbury and Zeebrugge in addition to its existing weekly service via its north Finland schedule.

As UK general liner agent for SOL, John Good Shipping said it would handle all aspects of the new service in the UK, including sales and marketing. It said the new service was “unique”, connecting Ventspils directly with the UK. Cargo types accommodated on the new route include trailers, shipper own containers, and other rolling cargo as well as break-bulk cargo loaded on roll trailers.

“The opening of the new service to Latvia is the next exciting phase in SOL’s development plans to expand its liner services in the Baltic region, and we very much look forward to making this service a huge success,” commented Alan Platt, chairman of John Good Shipping. “The rapid development of the existing Swedish and Finnish services are testimony to their long-term ambitions and growing reputation.”

Platt said SOL’s presence in the Baltic sea region increased the service offering to all customers operating on those routes, “and demonstrates that SOL remains committed to offering regular, reliable and fast transport services to its customers”.

SOL currently offers its customers regular, direct services connecting North Finland (Kemi & Oulu) with Germany, Benelux and the UK, as well as services between West Sweden (Gothenburg), Benelux and the UK.
