Farewell to former Harbour Master at Port of Southampton

Associated British Ports

The Port of Southampton bids a fond farewell to former Harbour Master, Captain Martin Phipps MBE, as he retires this week after 28 years working for ABP.

Martin began his career in the Merchant Navy, joining as a cadet at the age of 16 and rising through the ranks to become Master and eventually spending 12 years as Captain of a variety of ships from chemical carriers to cargo ships.

Martin joined ABP as a pilot in 1990 and became Harbour Master in 2011 where he was responsible for the safe navigation of all vessels using the port and operating across the Solent.

He was recognised in the Queens’ New Year’s Honours list earlier this year for his services to UK exports and received an MBE from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace in June alongside his wife Jill and three sons Andrew, Paul and Matthew.

Retirement will not be entirely relaxing for Martin as he remains actively involved with seven local groups, including positions as Chair of the Merchant Navy Welfare Committee (Southern Region) and President of the Southampton Sea Cadets.

Martin said: “I’ve had a wonderful career here at ABP and I will really miss all my colleagues from around the port community as well as at ABP. The port is so important to the local community and I’m really pleased to have been a part of that.”

ABP Southampton Director, Alastair Welch, said: “Martin has played such an important part in port operations for almost 30 years and I'm sure all port users will miss his personable nature, deep professionalism and thorough knowledge of the port. He’s always been ready with a joke or two to break the tension and we all wish him well in his retirement.”
