DSV expands LCL services into northern England

DSV in the UK has recently expanded its less-than-container-load (LCL) Sea Freight services to further enhance its offering to customers by running an additional consolidation service into the North of England.

The new premium service, which is running in addition to DSV’s weekly LCL service to London Gateway, offers customers an 8-day transit time from New York to Liverpool allowing a Northern unpack within two working days of arrival, with many of the shipments benefiting from a next day delivery.

Claus B. Jensen, Director LCL at DSV Air & Sea Ltd, commented:

“At DSV, we believe LCL is well positioned in the service gap between full-container-load (FCL) and airfreight and offers real value to exporters and importers on most global markets. We’ve been strategically developing a range of new products and service features to ensure we’re providing the best range of LCL services for customers who need a cost-effective solution offering increased speed to market. DSV delivers high levels of customer service, it’s well networked and LCL is an area where we have considerable expertise.”

DSV’s LCL services differentiate from competitors as they load more into their own system, which they argue means less damage and better information and communications for the customer, through their global IT systems. DSV also has full control of the supply chain as they’re handling all the planning in house.  

Jensen continued:

“Our in-house LCL specialist team in Purfleet gives us better control and management – and most importantly, it cuts out the middle man, so we can keep costs down and maintain the service levels our customers have come to expect from DSV. This service operates to a fixed weekly schedule, providing our customers with a reliable service that they can really count on.

“We know that our customers simply want to know the facts – where is my shipment and when will it arrive? As all the deliveries are fulfilled by DSV’s own vehicles, this enables end to-end visibility and track and trace on all deliveries. With our innovative IT platforms, such as myDSV, we ensure our technology is feeding back the information the customer wants to see. At DSV, we believe this is key to good customer service.”

Separately, DSV has been awarded the Authorised Economic Operator F (AEOF) accreditation, covering its Road, Air & Sea and Solutions operations, providing extra assurance to its customers that the organisation meets strict customs criteria, demonstrating quality, compliance and trustworthiness to the international supply chain.

In order to achieve AEOF status, DSV had to prove it met specific criteria derived from the Union Customs Code (UCC), including showcasing an appropriate record of compliance, demonstrating a satisfactory system of managing commercial and transport records with appropriate customs controls, demonstrating financial solvency as well as appropriate security and safety standards. By satisfying this criteria, DSV is proving itself to be reliable in their customs related operations throughout the European Community for goods imported into or exported from the EU.

Phil Evans, UK Customs & Security Manager for DSV, commented on the announcement:

“DSV has always conducted itself in keeping with the expectations of an AEO, but now we have been through the accreditation process and made it official. The timing was right for us to formalise this standard as, increasingly, our customers were seeking the extra assurance that AEO Accreditation provides.

“Additionally, our colleagues in the USA with C-TPAT wanted to derive the benefits mutual recognition could deliver between the two standards.”

Evans continued:

“DSV’s BREXIT Action Group has been working through all possible Brexit scenario’s to ensure we’re ready for March 2019, and we feel that AEO will definitely be an advantage post-Brexit, for DSV and our customers.

“However, the AEO accreditation isn’t the end for us. There is plenty of change to come within our business, we have always looking for ways to improve what we do and what we offer, to exceed the expectations of our customers and the authorities.”

And lastly, ​DSV has taken delivery of its 1,000th MAN truck in the UK.

Its latest addition, a TGX 26.500 with an XXL cab, will operate from the haulier’s Immingham depot.

The truck is painted in commemorative silver with the DSV logo in black, a change from its traditional deep blue livery with white lettering.

Keith Northen, manager fleet at Immingham DSV Road division, UK, said:

“This vehicle marks not one, but two milestones for DSV here in the UK. Firstly, it is the 1000th MAN truck that we have operated within our UK fleet over the past 20 years, and secondly all 1000 vehicles have been sold to us by the same contact from MAN, Mark Price.

“We have a long-term, firmly established and trusted relationship with both Mark and MAN,” Mr Northen expanded. “With over 20 years of experience in specifying and supplying our vehicles, Mark knows exactly what we need and delivers on time, every time.

The new TGX joins an existing fleet of 172 DSV vehicles, 142 of which are MAN.

DSV Commercials  located in Immingham, a MAN Truck & Bus franchised service provider, prepare all new DSV vehicles and maintain their own fleet locally, a service that they have provided since 1988
