Calais ‘rail motorway’ freight service resumes

Geodis Logistics’ VIIA Britanica rail service for unaccompanied road trailers between the French Pyrenees and Calais, with on-forwarding to the UK, will resume today (07/02/2017)

The service, which can carry up to 40 trailers in each direction, was launched in March last year, has not operated since July 2016, when it was suspended due to repeated incursions by migrants on to the tracks.

But improved security measures in and around Calais in recent months to protect the passage of freight trains and road freight vehicles have allowed the service to resume today, re-starting initially with one daily round trip.

“Our clients say they are very interested in this service, which offers a direct link between Spain and the UK at 10-15% below the cost of road transport,” said VIIA's chairman, Thierry Le Guilloux.

“Opening new rail links from Calais is the first step to building a multimodal transport corridor between Southern and Northern Europe.”

For his part, the chairman and CEO of the Port of Boulogne-Calais, Jean-Marc Puissesseau, remarked:

“This innovative service is the answer to transporters’ economic, environmental, and logistics efficiency needs, and naturally, we all expect it to grow and grow. This line is a model for the kind of services we want to promote in Calais today.”
